Post 1: Existing Takeaway Food Delivery Services/Industry

In the last decade the food delivery service industry has grown massively, largely as a result of the proliferation of smartphones, tablets and consumers' use of the Internet and apps. The online delivery service industry is worth $9.9 billion.

There are two types of food delivery services: Aggregators and New Delivery.

Aggregators work as middle men, taking orders from customers and giving them to restaurants who handle the delivery. New Delivery services take the order from the customer and pass it to the restaurant but it is the New Delivery services which deliver the food to the customer.

Existing Food Delivery Services

Deliveroo - is a New Delivery service founded in 2013. Often delivers food from restaurants rather than takeaway outlets. Its USP is quick delivery, premium food and delivery from big chain restaurants such as Byron Burgers, Five Guys and Wagamama. The website contains many appealing pictures of food and has a green and white colour scheme.

Just Eat - founded in 2001, its USP includes having a loyalty scheme and a massive variety with over 29,000 UK restaurants and over 87,000 globally. It is the largest food delivery service with over 22.8 million customers with a revenue of over £546 million in 2017. Its colour scheme is brighter than Deliveroo and the company has over 2000 orders per minute. Increasingly, consumers see Just Eat signs outside high street restaurants.

Hungry House - claimed over 10,000 restaurant partners in most major cities in the UK before it closed down in 2018 after 10 years of successful business. The company has since merged with Just Eat.

Uber Eats - launched by Uber in 2014. Its USP is that the customer can track the driver in real time to see when the food is arriving. The colour scheme is black, green and white.

Researching these existing online food delivery services has helped me better understand and appreciate the competition that exists but crucially it has enabled me to see the companies' USPs and has given me ideas about new elements I could bring to the industry with YOUR FOOD. It has made me realise that one element that is missing from existing services is a guarantee that the food will arrive exactly when desired - this is something which I will make my USP and reference in the company's slogan.

The links to the various sites I have looked at are incorporated into this post.
